Steve Knutson

Steve is a Government Innovation Fellow with the Housing and Homelessness Team. He is currently supporting the City of Detroit to advance coordinated, upstream homelessness prevention efforts to efficiently and equitably connect vulnerably housed Detroit residents to best-fit services and supports that reduce their likelihood of becoming homeless. Prior to joining the Government Performance Lab, Steve spent a decade working in direct service programming and community organizing. This includes managing reentry support and disability advocacy programs, leading outreach efforts for the National School Walkout Against Gun Violence, providing agricultural support to Paraguayan farmers as a Peace Corps Volunteer, and teaching climate-based curriculum as an AmeriCorps member.

Steve recently earned a Master of Public Policy from the University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. During his studies, he worked as a Summer Associate for the Robin Hood Foundation, providing technical assistance to better understand the impacts of civil legal interventions on household economic mobility. Steve lives in Detroit, where he enjoys spending time in any body of water, cooking, and building community through food.
